Welcome to The1920sChannel where it's the 1920s all the time! I love making videos about the important people and events that made 1920s America so unique. My main focus is making short documentaries, but I also post other videos that are readings of primary source material from contemporary news and entertainment publications. My goal is to make a video encyclopedia of the 1920s as complete as I can, but because I only do this by myself as a hobby, it will take a long time. But it will be a long time before I run out of ideas for videos. So please consider subscribing to my channel if any of this interests you!

How The 1921 Dempsey-Carpentier Fight Was Broadcast On The Radio
Interesting
I truly need to learn more black history.
Louise is extremely overrated. Not much to her acting other than looking angry.
There is a TV documentary about this.
Wouldn't an electric organ have been absolute state of the art at that time? Like the net or a computer is these days. Loving your clips 👌. Top job 👍
Welcome Home!!!
Oh how wrong was he. Very sad. Technology destroys all our jobs.
Ann Leaf and other outstanding female organists at the time may have resented White's continual identification of organists as "he."
In the early 1980's I got to be great friends with a lady who played piano for the silent movies in the 1920's. I remember her big brick house was like walking into a 1920's movie set. From the lamps to her fainting couch. AND her grand piano! Which her daughter gave to me after she died. (AND her ukelele). She was the sweetest lady. But still liked her bottle of VO whiskey. When we'd al;l get together, we would call out movie scenes, and she'd play the piano to the scene. I'll never forget her.
Aw, what a priceless memory! It recalls to my own mind, taking voice lessons (in the early 1990's) from a retired voice coach from the Julliard School of Music, in NYC. In her early days, "Flora," sang at the Metropolitan Opera House (in supporting roles) and fascinated me with her great stories. Her large and lovely house (in upstate New York, where I took my lessons) was a treasure trove of her solid and successful career in music.
When we consider the variety in theater size, from the grandest metropolitan movie palace to the humblest neighborhood screen, the size and skill of accompanists varied greatly in the silent era. If an audience refused to attend shows where the high school music teacher played an out of tune upright piano, they would never have seen The Gold Rush, The Big Parade, Ben Hur and many others. We now know that did not happen. Mr. White's observations sound like he was a bit of a snob, negotiating for a better contract.
I love the 1920s Channel
And yet, within a year talkies came in along with music which soon spelled DOOM to movie theater organists.
They could always play at roller skating rinks which thrived through most of the sixties. Or always in supper clubs of the time.
I wrote a paper on this for my freshman American history class in 1988. It was an active Democratic Party campaign.
Great presentation. Radio influencing peoples perception of what is good and bad in the 1920's. The effect ripples through time. Silent movies would soon leave the building followed by all the good and bad organists. The1920sChannel has found another Historical Gold Nugget.
Jazz was looked down upon during this time. Much jazz was not worthy of the name but George Gershwin was looked down upon by many so called critics during his time. He was a great genius who incorporated jazz and blues idioms because he recognized the possibilities. Duke Ellington was another great genius as well who never attended conservatory. He never would have been admitted anyway because his skin was too dark. I have no use for critics in any case as many just reveal their ignorance as soon as they open their mouths.
Bank Kennedy was the organist in the 1920s at the Palace Theater in Canton Ohio. The organ is one of two still in existence and is believed that his spirit is still present. Ghost hunters go there. Kennedys father was a concert organist in Mississippi along with his stepson.
Why Are The 1920s Still Popular? 1854pm 30.6.24 hair to suit your face..... the wee bobbed child's face, 10mins 28secs in...looks remarkably akin to.....jeeeez....it really does look like someone not too far away - the face directly above the word: HAIR.
As an organist myself, this makes me so happy. And as an organ technician this excites me as I work on a Wurlitzer Theatre Organ built in 1928 for the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. It is currently at the Senate Theatre in Detroit. Home of the Detroit Theatre Organ Society
I would love to hear you play! I am a huge fan of Jelani Eddington and have many of his recordings. Best wishes!
There's a local theater near me that shows silent movies with organist accompaniment. Mad respect for the organist. They have an amazing combination of musical skill, artistry, and even a kind of athleticism as they play for 60 minutes or more. I can imagine the level of attention they must develop to play along to the performance for so long.
The State Of Movie Theater Organists In 1928 1837pm 30.6.24 look at the size of his organ, was the cry!!!! the winter gardens organ in blackpool is proper monster................................... get yer organ oooot, then,. let's have a tinkle she grimaced.... the tawdry bon tempi he produced did little to sate her desire for a particular tune she needed to listen to.... such is life. such was the incompetence of the organist she now abhors.
Isnt this based on the Grace Brown murder in 1906?
I hate that the accounts are calling Black Wall Street a bunch of shacks
Sad thing is Nothing has Changed 😵💫😬
Perhaps off-topic, but I don't care. I'm retired and I admit I watch too much TV. I'm constantly bombarded with commercials for fragrant products, particularly home air fresheners in aerosol cans and wall plug-ins, perfumed laundry detergent and dryer sheets. The ads show actors inhaling deeply, then grinning with eyes rolled back. How can anybody's instincts not tell them these products are deadly? I'm sure the manufacturers know exactly what they're selling.
Today Harding would be indicted on these rumors.
There's a documentary called 'The Radium Girls' about these women. Just google it.
WONDERFUL! The panned closeups offer greater detail, which is cool. I found myself, however, really longing to see a full display of each graphic AFTER panning ( assuming it wouldn't conflict with any copyright issues ) - that would add a more cohesive overview to experience the artist's vision while really enhancing each overall visual.
I'm going to defend Tunney in the supposed "long count" controversy. It wasn't actually a long count, but rather a regular count that started late. It started late because of the rules of the match. Dempsey was required to go to a neutral corner after he knocked down Tunney, as opposed to his traditional habit of standing over the downed fighter to hit him as he tried to stand, as he had famously done to Jess Willard. By the rules, the ref would not begin the count until the other fighter stepped to a neutral corner. The time it took for Dempsey to follow this rule accounts for all of the lost time in that incident. Tunney could have gotten up earlier. A close watching of the film shows clearly that Tunney had risen to a one leg crouch, with one knee still on the mat, and was watching the ref count and waiting until 9 to stand. This is still a practice in boxing, and many matches have a mandatory 8 count any time a fighter hits the mat. Two things to take away. First, that any delay in the time from knockdown to resumption of fighting was caused by Dempsey. And second, Tunney could have risen sooner, had that delay not happened. Gene Tunney was the better boxer.
Oh nooooooooooo, MuLaToS
What about Black Lung (CWP)? What distinguishes these radium workers from other lethal occupations, other than the mystique of radiation surrounding it? At the time the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge killed 35 workers, it was known perfectly well that some would die completing the project. Ex-convicts who are basically unemployable have been hired as temporary workers in extremely hazardous occupations. The list goes on…..
What distinguishes them is that they were female. The media and the public at large will always lionize and care far more about unjust female workplace fatalities than male. At the time of this incident females probably comprised somewhere around less than 2% of all workplace fatalities, even today the figure is barely 8%. It's the reason every school child is taught about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and every adult knows the story, while at the same time barely a soul has ever heard of the Monongah mining disaster, despite the latter killing more than double the number of men than the former killed women. The wiki article for the Shirtwaist disaster is approximately four times as long as the Monongah mine disaster. Men are viewed by society as largely expendable and forgettable, disasters *really* matter in the public eye when they happen to women.
Thanks!
I thought this was about Ruth Snyder whose famous death picture was snapped at NY “Sing Sing” electric chair in July of 1928. While I believe Ruth deserved her sentence, I feel for those hard working women who were dumped by the system after their plight was revealed. Have a great day!
Sad
Democrats have never changed and never will. It's all they have to offer.
Stop gaslighting yourself bro.
Some movie's would be great. As originally seen. Cartoons included along with the intermission.
Harding remarked, "Well, maybe someone did jump over the fence."
So awful. I remember seeing illustrations of the bone loss.
Fortunately, corporations today show deep concern for the welfare of their employees. (Sarcasm)
Thank You.
God have mercy on the poor lamb s 😢 my mum told me about the night (glow) green death back in the day and (then) you get a job as a rear gunner in a big bomber if you (eat) carrots 😮 the past (gaslighting) or just old school capitalism????????? 😢😮😅😊
I recently read the carrots story was a cover to keep the Germans from discovering the Allies had radar.
I believe that's the same statue of limitations in VA for medical lawsuits.
Those poor women. R.I.P
People who enjoy this should check out The Great Gildersleeve radio program. It’s on RUclips and it’s fantastic
Anyone here after watching Robert Eggers upcoming Nosferatu trailer? It looks amazing Christmas can’t get here fast enough!
Very tragic story. "Radium Girls" is a 2018 movie about this.
It’s a book 📖 as well.
Horrible
Oh So Sad, women exploited by certain businessmen ,who murdered those women. The men handling the radium knew the risks, they wore lead jackets, poor young women were kept in the dark.
Well, It's a good that business doesn't do things like this anymore. 😬
You THINK! 🤔
Thanks for the sad, cautionary story, considering the current social/political climate.
